SPT were engaged by Team GB’s ‘Secret Squirrel Club’ and Cervelo to produce a lightweight, performance-driven livery for the velodrome bikes used in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The project hit the buffers when Team GB decided against creating a livery and moving to just black. SPT were able to turn it around for Cervelo to enable them to receive branding and coloration in the Olympics, rescuing 18 months of Cervelo design and planning work
Drawing on the latest F1 technology and adhering to British Cycling’s ethos of marginal gains, the team at SPT were able to contribute to the effort by exceeding the specified weight targets by over 70%.
In terms of livery design, Team GB athletes were very particular about the need to see exposed carbon fibre on the front forks. Psychologically this made them feel that the bike was a light and stripped back as possible. SPT were able to integrate the psychological needs of the athletes into the design.
Not only was there visual and technological performance impact, Cervelo have applied some of the techniques and patented SPT processes to their manufacturing of their high performance mass market bikes.
